Frequently Asked Questions

What applications do you support?

Please refer to our Supported Applications page.

What types of files are best to send for plotting?

HPGL and HPGL/2 files work the best! They have become almost industry standard. As long as you have AutoCAD or Microstation, you can create these types of files which generate a "plt" extension. You can also send us a PDF file as well.

What types of files are best to send for Color Output?

Although we accept a much broader range of files in our color department, EPS files are the "preferred" format. Although slightly larger, they contain all the data required to accurately output your file. However, if you can’t provide us with an EPS file, you may save your file in TIFF, PDF or JPG file formats.

At what resolution should I save my photos and graphics?

Resolutions should be set to 400dpi for B&W, or 600 dpi for color. BEWARE of pictures and graphics pulled from the internet as these are often low resolution (typically 72dpi or 96dpi) and will appear pixilated and blocky when printed.

What are my size limitations in Black and White Output?

You are limited to 36" wide by any reasonable length. Wider outputs up to 60” are available on our large format plotter, but keep in mind this is a more expensive process.

What are my size limitations in Color Output?

Our large format plotters have the capability to output up to 60" wide by any reasonable length. We can output onto a wide variety of media ranging from plain bond to vinyl and other specialty materials.

Why do the printed colors look different from the colors on my screen?

This is due to the difference in how the printers and monitors produce color. Monitors use the RGB (red, green, blue) color model which in most cases supports a wider spectrum of colors. Printers use the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color model which can reproduce most, but not all of the colors in the RGB color model. Depending on the equipment used, CMYK generally matches 85-90% of the colors in the RGB model.

When a color is selected from the RGB model that is out of the range of the CMYK model the application chooses what it thinks is the closest color that will match. Programs like Adobe PhotoShop will allow you to choose which color will be replaced. Others may not.

Can I send my files electronically?

You have three options available to sending your files electronically.

  1. Attach your files to an e-mail and send to info@topekablue.com. Please provide detailed instructions and contact information. Keep in mind, depending on your internet connection and your e-mail software; you may be limited to the size of your attachment.
  2. For larger files you’ll want to send your files using our FTP server. For detailed instructions please refer to our FTP Instruction page.
  3. We also offer Océ Repro Desk which allows sending files directly from AutoCAD or your Windows application directly to our Océ 9800 B&W printers. Contact our Support department to receive your copy.

Do you sell plotter supplies?

Yes! We sell a wide range of plotter ink and all types of media for your in-house plotters.
